Stephen Hawking - a gravidade é Deus?
"...Professor Stephen Hawking argues that the Big Bang, rather than occurring following the intervention of a divine being, was inevitable due to the law of gravity."
"...Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing"

Fuck the South
Via shanerichmond:
November 3, 2004
"Fuck the South. Fuck 'em. We should have let them go when they wanted to leave. But no, we had to kill half a million people so they'd stay part of our special Union. Fighting for the right to keep slaves - yeah, those are states we want to keep.
And now what do we get? We're the fucking Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite? How about this for arrogant: the South is the Real America? The Authentic America. Really?
Cause we fucking founded this country, assholes. Those Founding Fathers you keep going on and on about? All that bullshit about what you think they meant by the Second Amendment giving you the right to keep your assault weapons in the glove compartment because you didn't bother to read the first half of the fucking sentence? Who do you think those wig-wearing lacy-shirt sporting revolutionaries were? They were fucking blue-staters, dickhead. Boston? Philadelphia? New York? Hello? Think there might be a reason all the fucking monuments are up here in our backyard?
No, No. Get the fuck out. We're not letting you visit the Liberty Bell and fucking Plymouth Rock anymore until you get over your real American selves and start respecting those other nine amendments. Who do you think those fucking stripes on the flag are for? Nine are for fucking blue states. And it would be 10 if those Vermonters had gotten their fucking Subarus together and broken off from New York a little earlier. Get it? We started this shit, so don't get all uppity about how real you are you Johnny-come-lately "Oooooh I've been a state for almost a hundred years" dickheads. Fuck off.
Arrogant? You wanna talk about us Northeasterners being fucking arrogant? What's more American than arrogance? Hmmm? Maybe horsies? I don't think so. Arrogance is the fucking cornerstone of what it means to be American. And I wouldn't be so fucking arrogant if I wasn't paying for your fucking bridges, bitch.
All those Federal taxes you love to hate? It all comes from us and goes to you, so shut up and enjoy your fucking Tennessee Valley Authority electricity and your fancy highways that we paid for. And the next time Florida gets hit by a hurricane you can come crying to us if you want to, but you're the ones who built on a fucking swamp. "Let the Spanish keep it, it’s a shithole," we said, but you had to have your fucking orange juice.
The next dickwad who says, "It’s your money, not the government's money" is gonna get their ass kicked. Nine of the ten states that get the most federal fucking dollars and pay the least... can you guess? Go on, guess. That’s right, motherfucker, they're red states. And eight of the ten states that receive the least and pay the most? It’s too easy, asshole, they’re blue states. It’s not your money, assholes, it’s fucking our money. What was that Real American Value you were spouting a minute ago? Self reliance? Try this for self reliance: buy your own fucking stop signs, assholes.
Let’s talk about those values for a fucking minute. You and your Southern values can bite my ass because the blue states got the values over you fucking Real Americans every day of the goddamn week. Which state do you think has the lowest divorce rate you marriage-hyping dickwads? Well? Can you guess? It’s fucking Massachusetts, the fucking center of the gay marriage universe. Yes, that’s right, the state you love to tie around the neck of anyone to the left of Strom Thurmond has the lowest divorce rate in the fucking nation. Think that’s just some aberration? How about this: 9 of the 10 lowest divorce rates are fucking blue states, asshole, and most are in the Northeast, where our values suck so bad. And where are the highest divorce rates? Care to fucking guess? 10 of the top 10 are fucking red-ass we're-so-fucking-moral states. And while Nevada is the worst, the Bible Belt is doing its fucking part.
But two guys making out is going to fucking ruin marriage for you? Yeah? Seems like you're ruining it pretty well on your own, you little bastards. Oh, but that's ok because you go to church, right? I mean you do, right? Cause we fucking get to hear about it every goddamn year at election time. Yes, we're fascinated by how you get up every Sunday morning and sing, and then you're fucking towers of moral superiority. Yeah, that's a workable formula. Maybe us fucking Northerners don't talk about religion as much as you because we're not so busy sinning, hmmm? Ever think of that, you self-righteous assholes? No, you're too busy erecting giant stone tablets of the Ten Commandments in buildings paid for by the fucking Northeast Liberal Elite. And who has the highest murder rates in the nation? It ain't us up here in the North, assholes.
Well this gravy train is fucking over. Take your liberal-bashing, federal-tax-leaching, confederate-flag-waving, holier-than-thou, hypocritical bullshit and shove it up your ass.
And no, you can't have your fucking convention in New York next time. Fuck off."

O comentário de um leitor a What Are Alien Species Like? Symmetrical, Solid, and Seeing (Probably) no Science Not Fiction:
Consequently if we want to understand what an alien looks like we must understand the environment they come from.
I could point here to the Drake equation. The drake equation does not have enough variables and needs extra inputs. The implied question is would life occur under different environments than ours? The answer is most likely no. There are a number of very unique circumstances that conspired to produce us.
The key is chemistry. Water is a very good solvent. Hydrocarbons cannot dissolve materials as well and this impedes development of complex life. Also carbon has four places to form bonds allowing complex chains necessary for carbon based life. Silicon also has four bonds and is not as easy to use with water. Extremophiles can survive outside the basic chemistry and environment but are restricted in the optimal growth necessary for intelligent life.
Additionally earths liquid metal core maintained by the low orbit of the moon is a fairly unique planetary event. The liquid core creates a magnetic field protecting us from the suns radiation. The tectonic plate action helps to cool the outer layer enough to support life preventing Venus like greenhouse effects. Additionally black smokers, underwater volcanoes allow life to get started. Tides and seasons allow a repeatable cycle helping evolution.
We also have very circular orbits creating stable environments in order for life to develop. We have Jupiter as a big protector from collisions giving life an average window of 700 million years to develop between impacts. The earth is large enough to produce life without risking mars like atmosphere evaporation or Venus greenhouse. The land mass is large enough for creatures to evolve out of the oceans and develop tools and fire. All of these conditions would have to be replicated in order to produce intelligent life.
Certain characteristics are necessary and have evolved several times taking the same form. Eyes for example have evolved several times and always look the same. It would be safe to assume hearing, taste and smell share this characteristic. Theses sensors are usually located close to the brain and usually some place high. Hands with opposable thumbs would be evident if the aliens evolve from trees which they most likely do.
Assume all these factors could be replicated the question becomes what factors could be different and still have intelligent life. The asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs could be different. Comparing the Ichthyosaurus and Dolphins is a good example. Both creatures look and perform the same. One is a dinosaur and the other is a mammal. Assuming the underlying architectures roughly parallel our evolution our fellow aliens may be more dinosaur like if they missed an asteroid.
If they have had a few extra asteroids they maybe different again.
If the aliens are more evolved they may be more silicon machines than biological.
The surprise would be how similar to us they really are and probably could even be mistaken for human.
The real difference would be language and culture.
If you want to understand the form of an alien species you have to examine its environment.

Filhos, pais e literatura
Nos comentários, alguém levanta a questão de que "it's [not] children per se that are the literary problem, it's the parent child relationship. After all, in children's literature the first thing you have to do is get rid of the parents, either by making the child an orphan (Harry Potter, the Water Babies, Oliver Twist, Star Wars, Great Expectations) or by exiling the children (Narnia)".

More Gangs, Less Crime, por Russell S. Sobel:
Street gangs, such as the famous Crips and Bloods, are often viewed as a cause of crime and violence. Popular media coverage on TV and in the newspapers often portrays the brutal activities of such gangs. This is understandable for the simple reason that areas with more violent crime also have more youth street gangs. The implication would seem clear: to reduce crime, just break up gangs. However, an article I recently coauthored with Brian J. Osoba, "Youth Gangs as Pseudo-Governments: Implications for Violent Crime," calls this conventional wisdom into question. Our analysis suggests not that gangs cause violence, but that violence causes gangs. In other words, gangs form in response to government's failure to protect youths against violence. The surprising implication of our insight is that efforts to reduce gang activity could actually increase violent crime.
(...)
Applying this concept to street gangs suggests that gangs evolve in response to a high level of pre-existing violence in communities. More important, it suggests that the net effect of gangs is to reduce the level of violence—i.e., if the gangs did not exist, there would be more violent crime. In the end, the threat of gang retaliation prevents some violent crimes that would have otherwise taken place.
(...)
These findings imply that law-enforcement efforts to break up gangs could actually result in more violence. Enforcement efforts that destabilize the gang structures within a city will make it more difficult for gangs to offer protection and will interfere with gangs' ability to make treaties or truces. Indeed, in a separate article, David B. Skarbek and I, using a different data set, found that, as police budgets devoted to gangs increased, holding other factors constant, gang drive-by shootings per capita rose

How many people did God kill in the Bible?
It's impossible to say for sure, but plenty. How many did God drown in the flood or burn to death in Sodom and Gomorrah? How many first-born Egyptians did he kill? There's just no way to count them all. This list doesn't include those figures.

Is it just me or...does it seem that God took a prozac before jumping into the [New Testament].None of these deaths occur in that portion. Why the sudden case of bi-polar disorder?"

You won a free ticket to see an Eric Clapton concert (which has no resale value). Bob Dylan is performing on the same night and is your next-best alternative activity. Tickets to see Dylan cost $40. On any given day, you would be willing to pay up to $50 to see Dylan. Assume there are no other costs of seeing either performer. Based on this information, what is the opportunity cost of seeing Eric?

«Not guilty. The Israeli captain who emptied his rifle into a Palestinian schoolgirl»
An Israeli army officer who fired the entire magazine of his automatic rifle into a 13-year-old Palestinian girl and then said he would have done the same even if she had been three years old was acquitted on all charges by a military court yesterday.
(...)
Capt R's lawyers argued that the "confirmation of the kill" after a suspect is shot was a standard Israeli military practice to eliminate terrorist threats.
Following the verdict, Capt R burst into tears, turned to the public benches and said: "I told you I was innocent."
The army's official account said that Iman was shot for crossing into a security zone carrying her schoolbag which soldiers feared might contain a bomb. It is still not known why the girl ventured into the area but witnesses described her as at least 100 yards from the military post which was in any case well protected.
A recording of radio exchanges between Capt R and his troops obtained by Israeli television revealed that from the beginning soldiers identified Iman as a child.
In the recording, a soldier in a watchtower radioed a colleague in the army post's operations room and describes Iman as "a little girl" who was "scared to death". After soldiers first opened fire, she dropped her schoolbag which was then hit by several bullets establishing that it did not contain explosive. At that point she was no longer carrying the bag and, the tape revealed, was heading away from the army post when she was shot.[Via Lenin's Tomb]
Although the military speculated that Iman might have been trying to "lure" the soldiers out of their base so they could be attacked by accomplices, Capt R made the decision to lead some of his troops into the open. Shortly afterwards he can be heard on the recording saying that he has shot the girl and, believing her dead, then "confirmed the kill".
"I and another soldier ... are going in a little nearer, forward, to confirm the kill ... Receive a situation report. We fired and killed her ... I also confirmed the kill. Over," he said.
Palestinian witnesses said they saw the captain shoot Iman twice in the head, walk away, turn back and fire a stream of bullets into her body.

Os beneficios sociais estimulam o desemprego?
Welfare benefits & unemployment, por Chris Dillow:
The problem here is that the anti-welfare lobby misrepresents its case. For example, when Neil O’Brien claims that higher benefits encourage people to stay on benefits rather than find work, what he should say is: “other things being equal, higher benefits will, at the margin, discourage people from seeking work.”
Put like this, four questions arise.
1. Is even this true? Yes, higher benefits encourage people to substitute work for leisure. But as Don says, there might also be an offsetting income effect; higher benefits allow people to afford bus fares to Job Centres, or a local newspaper, or child care whilst they are at interviews, or a pleasant-smelling clunge that’ll impress an interviewer. They might, therefore price people into work.
2. How extensive is the margin? One of my big gripes against the right is their tendency to assume that margins are more extensive than they are. And this might be the case here. Some cross-country evidence has found that the link between job search and the ratio of unemployment benefits to wages is statistically insignificant.
3. Isn’t there an aggregation problem here? Let’s concede that lower unemployment benefits do encourage people to look for work. For any individual unemployed person, this increases their chances of getting a job. However, unless aggregate employment increases, their increased chances come at the expense of lower chances of finding work for someone else. The question, then, is: does increased job search lead to increased aggregate employment?

[A respeito deste post d'O Insurgente]

Which Primitives?, por John Bedell:
One thing we know is that our distant ancestors did not farm or raise animals; they were hunters and gatherers. We therefore look to modern hunting and gathering groups for insights into our own distant past.
What are hunter-gatherers like? Are they peaceful or violent? Do they carefully tend the wild resources on which they depend or use whatever they can take? Are men and women equal in status among them? To ask these questions sets us trembling, as before the revelation of some great religious mystery: tell us about ourselves, O Anthropologist. What is our nature?
To ask these questions also assumes that they have answers. We can't say what hunter-gatherers are like unless they are like something in particular. But are they? Not according to Robert Kelly. In The Foraging Spectrum Kelly argues that hunter-gatherers are so diverse in their behavior that the words do not even denote a meaningful category for analysis. Of course, Kelly managed to write a 446-page book about this non-category, so the words must mean something, but Kelly has a point. Hunter-gatherer societies differ from each other on every point of interest to moderns trying to understand their own origins: some are violent, some peaceful; some are egalitarian, some have chiefs and slaves; in some men and women are equal in most ways, but in others women are denigrated and oppressed.
