However, what I do know is that, for all their complaints, her parents have been handled with kid gloves by the media. If Madeleine’s mother had been a young, spotty, inarticulate single parent who had been down the pub with a boyfriend instead of a smart, articulate, professional with media connections (a friend who can knock on Kirsty Wark’s door at midnight), having dinner with friends they would have been vilified for child neglect (regardless as to whether or not there were any suspicions of them having made Madeleine disappear); they would also have faced some uncomfortable interviews with social services about their fitness to care for the other children.

It seams to me that by putting mother and father of Maddie as the suspects this will cause the quick return of the couple to England, because:
In Case 1
If they really are inocent, the simple fact to turn now into suspects it would cause them the indignation and repugnance which explains the imediate return to ther country!
In case 2
If they really are culpable of any crime, they should start to feel they were being discovered that explains too the quick return to their country, where is much more difficult to the portuguese authorities continue with the efforts to get an judgement and any condemnation.
The result should be always the same: either the parents are culpable or inocent!
